Do you have: Mold? Cracks? Dampness? White Chalking? Peeling Paint? Insects? Water? Musty Smell? Allergies?

Mold/Mildew: Molds are usually not a problem indoors, unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing. If there is mold growth in your home you must fix the water problem. If you clean up the mold, but don't fix the water problem the mold problem will come back. Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergic responses include hay fever-type symptons, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose throat, and lungs of both mold-allewrgic and non-allergic people.

White Chalking: Efflorescense is a white power that when visible on the surface of brick, block or poured masonry is an idication of excessive water within the masonry structure. It often occurs when rainwater enters the masonry wall. Once the water is inside the wall it will dissolve soluble salts within the individual masonry units and the mortar. As the water migrates to the inside surface of the masonry wall by wicking action it carries these soluble salts with it and then the deposits them on the surface of the masonry during evaporation. This is a sure sign of excessive water infitration into the masonry wall and if not taken care of, can lead to costly damage with premature deterioration. As with any water problem you must stop the water from entering the wall.

Peeling Paint: Foundations are often a source of moisture. Many baements will have problems due to the foundation cracks or lack of concrete sealer, tar. If moisture is under the point, cracking peeling or flaking can result. It is vital to inhibit this moisture in order to prevent peeling paint. This water will do damage to more than the paint. In order to prevent interior peeling paint look to the exterior of your home first. Peeling paint on your basement wall is a sure sign that you need basement waterproofing.

Insects: Household pests that carry germs, bacteria, disease or viruses and often times have the capacity to cause structural damage in a home. High moisture conditions attract the pests. Cracking walls in the foundation provide the point of entry. Some insects can inflict a painful bit and can become so abundant they need to be controlled. Ants, beetles, termites, spiders, mice, rates - even snakes - are a welcome guest in a wet basement. A damp, wet basement = pests & insects.

Dry rot: While it might seem like there are a lot of dry rot causes, they can all be boiled down to one word - water. When wood sits in water or is exposed to a lot of moisture, it can be a haven for fungus to grow and spread. As this fungus takes over, it creates weak spots in the wood, which cause the wood to crumble and appear rotted.

Musty smell: Scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air. Other reasearch indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to the exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors.

Cracking: Wall cracks are serious and should never be treated lightly or disregarded. Technically, as soon as a crack opens the wall has failed. If water is forced up through the floor you have a major problem that needs immediate repair. That is enough water pressure to cause basement walls to fail.
